March 22, 2026 / Matt Ritchey / Matthew 27:45-50 : We are under the authority of The Supreme & Righteous King : Jesus endured the deepest agony on our behalf : Jesus perfectly obeyed God the Father from the place of hell : Restoration through Christ is possible – He puts His righteousness on us. At the cross, Jesus was treated as we deserve so we could be treated as He deserves. NOTES: QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY Read Matthew 27:45-46. 2 Corinthians 5:21. Leviticus 17:11. Hebrews 9:12-14. Why is it necessary to understand God’s holiness as “unmatchable” before we can truly appreciate what Jesus did on the Cross? Based on the text, in what sense was He “forsaken,” and why did God allow this “infinite suffering” to happen to His own Son? How does acknowledging our “actual sin” (personal choice) rather than just “infirmity” (human weakness) lead us toward a more real hope? Timothy Keller is quoted saying, “Jesus died the death we should have died and lived the life we should have lived.” How does the reality that Jesus was “treated as we deserve so we could be treated as He deserves” change the way you view your standing before God today? How does Jesus’ “perfect obedience” during His darkest moment provide a roadmap for how we should respond when God feels silent in our own lives? PERSONAL REFLECTION & APPLICATION The Holiness of God positions us as the “non-center” of our own existence. This week, identify one area—perhaps a specific worry or a personal ambition—where you have acted as the “center.” Practice consciously handing the authority of that situation back to a Holy God. Because God chose to prioritize our reconciliation over intervening in His Son’s suffering, Jesus experienced a level of “forsakenness” that we will never have to endure. This week, practice replacing fear or doubt with this truth: The suffering Jesus endured is the very thing that secures the nearness (with God) I can now enjoy.
