CONFIDENCE AND HOPE

September 14, 2025 / Keith Waggoner / 1 John 2-3

BIG POINT: Our hope is in and that hope changes

John reveals four truths about this hope:

1. Our hope is secured by

2. Our hope is displayed by

3. Our hope is established by

4. Our hope is fulfilled as

NOTES:

QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY

• What’s one quirky or funny family resemblance you’ve noticed in your

family?

Read 1 John 2:28-3:10 and discuss:

• Why is our hope tied to the return of Christ?

• John says that abiding leads to confidence when Christ returns. What

does it mean for you personally to “abide” in Christ?

• Why do you think John uses the “born again” language to bring clarity

to our identity in Christ?

• In what ways do you see God’s “family resemblance” showing up in

your life since you came to Christ?

• Why does John make such a big deal about contrasting the practice

of sin with the practice of righteousness? What are some takeaways

from what he writes?

• Have you ever struggled to believe you were truly loved by God? What

helped move you past that? Why is it significant that God’s love for us

isn’t based on performance? How does that truth motivate obedience

differently than rules or legalism?

• John says we will one day be like Jesus. Why does knowing our

future identity (being like Jesus) give us motivation to live differently

now?

• How do you see the Spirit already changing you in daily life?

PERSONAL REFLECTION AND APPLICATION

• Pray: What evidence of Your spiritual DNA do I see in my life right

now? Where do I still resist looking like You?

• Ask a close friend or family member where they see “God’s family

resemblance” in your life.

• Rest in the truth that you am more loved and accepted in Christ than

you ever dared hope. Jesus is coming back for you!
