Two things God calls His people to in these verses:
1. Honor and to .
To do so, there are three things we must recognize:
• is our (personally, nationally, culturally)
• God institutes
• are the ultimate judges of
2. Endure U like Jesus did.
NOTES:
QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY
Read 1 Peter 2:13-25 and discuss:
• Why is submission a sticky subject for believers? What misguided interpretations of this concept have made it so controversial?
• Why do you think Peter used the word “honor” for both the ordinary people and the emperor but the word “fear” for God?
• Do you believe that all authority is granted by God? Why or why not? What is God’s role in institutions of authority?
• Why are we prone to rebellion? How do you see evidence of this in your own life? In the world around you?
• Describe ways we can honor and appropriately submit to ungodly authorities.
• Look closely at the example of Christ described in verses 21-25. If we are to follow in His steps, how should we respond to injustice and suffering?
• How can we encourage and challenge one another in light of these verses?
• What was the biggest takeaway from the message?
PERSONAL REFLECTION AND APPLICATION
• Pray for your national, state, and city leaders by name throughout the week.
• Examine your personal response to authorities in your life, whether that be at home, school, work, church, or government. Is your response more like Christ or the overall culture around you? What needs to change?
• Find a way to encourage an authority God has placed in your life (whether they are Christian or not).
