NOTES:
QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY
Read Luke 16:19-31 and discuss:
• What stood out to you most about the parable of the rich man and
Lazarus?
• What misconceptions about hell does this parable help clear up and
what questions does it raise?
• Discuss the contrast between the two characters. The name Lazarus
means “God is my help”. How would they have been seen here in this
life? Does their position in eternal life surprise you? Why or why not?
• How does the parable help us understand God’s justice and love
simultaneously? How is justice a good thing? If God wasn’t just, would
He still be loving?
• Why do you think God “honors” the choices people make, even if that
leads them to hell? Would people who don’t want what God wants for
them even want to be in Heaven?
• How does the doctrine of hell affect your understanding of Jesus’
sacrifice on the cross?
• In what ways does understanding hell deepen your appreciation of
God’s love?
• How should the eternal consequences of our choices impact how we
live day to day?
PERSONAL REFLECTION AND APPLICATION
• Meditate on the fact that eternity will reveal your true heart. Ask God
to reveal any false security or self-righteousness you might be trusting
in.
• Pray earnestly for family, friends, coworkers, or neighbors who may
be “on the fast track” to eternal separation from God.
• Practice gratitude for the salvation you have received. Let it fuel
worship and joyful obedience.
