Don’t Quit!

April 30, 2023 / Keith Waggoner / Revelation 2:8-11

The theme of Rev. 2 & 3: Jesus knows His Bride, the Church:

1. Jesus knows what His Church loves (Ephesus).

2. Jesus knows when His Church

(Revelation 2:8-11: Smyrna)

3. Jesus knows the real of His Church’s

(Revelation 3:7-13: Philadelphia)

Three takeaways from these two messages:

• The Church is

• The pain of is greater than the pain of

• Jesus loves it when His Church

NOTES:

QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY

Read Revelation 2:8-11 & 3:7-13 and discuss:

• Have you ever suffered because of following Jesus? If so, share the story. What is your typical response to opposition?
• What are the differences between real persecution and offenses or inconveniences? Give some examples. Why should we be careful to not call inconveniences persecution?

• Why is it that so often persecution seems to come from religious people, even apparently-professing Christians?
• How might the message “be faithful, even to the point of death” have been received by the church in Smyrna?
• Provide some examples of when we have to submit to Christ above submitting to human authorities. What does that look like practically? • How does Christ keep His bride safe even through suffering?
• How would the promises to the two churches have encouraged those
who were suffering? What is the significance today?

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Do you ever feel insignificant? Read and re-read the letter to these two churches. What does this teach you about the difference between what we see and what God sees? How does this inform the way I live?
