The Path to Freedom

July 23, 2023 / Matt Ritchey

Four Pillars of Freedom:

  1. What is isn’t always good
  2. What is isn’t always healthy
  3. The power of dominates and leads to death
  4. The power of frees and leads to life

The Path to Freedom:

  1. All Sin has consequences that are far reaching –
  2. Shame isolates & leads to death –
  3. All Sin is paid for by Jesus –

NOTES:

Questions for Further Study

  • Try not to get too political, but what are some things that are legal today that Christians should not do? What is illegal that Christians should be doing?
  • What are some natural desires that may not be all that bad but Christians should resist?
  • What happens when we let our natural appetites, even desires for non-sinful things, dominate us?  What makes something an idol?
  • Sexual desire in and of itself is not wrong-God designed us as sexual beings. Why does God confine sexual intimacy to be experienced only in within a marriage covenant between one man and one woman?
  • What happens when lust or sexual activity is experienced outside of the marriage covenant? What are the consequences?
  • People often carry the burden of embarrassment and shame regarding sexual sin. How can we be the kind of person that people can talk to about their failures?
  • It is unhealthy to tell everyone everything but someone trustworthy and spiritually mature, should know everything. What does proper confession look like? What can we do to lift each other up spiritually?
  • What is present in the life of a person who is living in freedom? How can we appropriately honor each other for pursuing Jesus and living in His forgiveness?

Personal Reflection:

  • Think about you past.  Are you defined by your past or do you have freedom from it?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 9-11. Is your identity in v. 9-10 or v. 11? Pray and ask God to reveal this to you. Remember, the tone of the enemy is one of an abuser and accuser. The tone of God is one of mercy and love. Listen closely.
  • Based on your reflection and what you heard from God, what is your next step? If you are defined by your past, confession and repentance is needed. If you live in freedom, you need to be an encourager to others.
  • Ask God to lead you to someone who can help you take your next step.
