THE (NOT SO) SECRET TO THE GOOD LIFE

September 29, 2024 / Keith Waggoner / Colossians 3-4

Understanding God’s design for the good life :

  1. begins and ends with God.

  2. God has for husbands and wives.

• Helper: one who

• Head: one who

        3. God has of husbands and wives.

BIG POINT: The key to every healthy, Christ-honoring family is

        4. Fulfilling God’s plan

NOTES:

QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY

• Share some advice would you give to someone starting a family. What pitfalls should they look out for? What are some key things that will contribute to a family’s health and success?

Read Colossians 3:18-4:1 and discuss:

• What is your immediate reaction to what you’ve read? How does this stand in contrast with today’s conventional wisdom?
• Why is authority such a hot-button issue? Why does it matter that authority begins and ends with God?

• How do the different roles God created complete marriage? Give examples from your own experience.
• Why is the qualification of submission and loving that Paul offers in Ephesians 5:22-33 so important to understanding this properly?
• Discuss what submission is and what it’s not. How do we submit “as to the Lord”? What does that look like practically?
• The husband is the head of the wife “as Christ is the head of the church”. What did it (and does it) look like for Christ to love and lead the church? What are the implications for husbands?
• Describe the significance of selflessness in following Jesus. How does that impact our families?
• What was the biggest takeaway from the message?

PERSONAL REFLECTION AND APPLICATION

Read through Ephesians 5:22-33 this week and prayerfully reflect:

• How has selfishness cost me relationally in my family and/or friendships?
• What is an area in which God is calling me to selflessly submit, serve, and love a spouse, parent, child, or friend?
• If married, share with your spouse at least one thing you appreciate
about them and do it each day this week. It can’t be the same thing every day! Commit to pray for your spouse by name every day this week while also praying for God to reveal to you the next steps you need to take in living out His design and purpose for marriage.
